TATTOO APPRENTICESHIPS IN SAN DIEGO

TURN YOUR ART INTO A CAREER

Being able to draw is one thing. Learning how to become a professional tattoo artist is something completely different. The SoCal Tattoo Apprenticeship Program is designed for aspiring tattoo artists who are serious about learning the craft inside a working San Diego tattoo shop. You'll learn alongside experienced tattoo artists while developing the artistic, technical, safety, and shop skills needed to begin building a career in tattooing. This isn't just about learning how to operate a tattoo machine. You'll learn how designs translate from paper to skin, how to work with clients, how to prepare a professional tattoo station, how to choose and maintain equipment, and how a real tattoo shop operates every day.

Our goal is to give apprentices a strong foundation they can continue building on throughout their careers.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN at socal tattoo & piercing

Your apprenticeship begins with the fundamentals. You'll work on drawing, design, composition, linework, shading, tattoo placement, and understanding how artwork needs to be adapted when it's going onto the human body. As you progress, you'll begin learning about tattoo machines, needles and cartridges, inks, stencil preparation, workstation setup and breakdown, tattoo application, and the equipment professional artists use every day. Just as importantly, you'll learn proper sanitation, cross contamination prevention, bloodborne pathogen safety, and professional shop procedures before progressing into hands on tattooing.

THE APPRENTICESHIP JOURNEY

Becoming a tattoo artist doesn't happen overnight. The SoCal apprenticeship is structured around stages of development that allow you to build your skills, knowledge, and confidence as you progress. Advancement isn't simply about putting in a certain number of days or checking boxes. It's about demonstrating that you're ready for the next stage.

STAGE ONE: ART & SHOP FUNDAMENTALS

Approximately 3 Months

Every tattoo starts with art. You'll begin by developing your drawing and design skills while learning how a professional tattoo shop operates. You'll work on creating tattooable artwork, understanding placement and composition, improving linework and shading, and learning how designs need to change depending on where they're being placed on the body. You'll also become familiar with the everyday responsibilities and expectations that come with working inside a professional tattoo shop. This is where you begin transitioning from someone who loves tattoo art into someone learning to think like a tattoo artist.

STAGE TWO: TATTOO APPLICATION & EQUIPMENT

Approximately 3 Months

Once you've developed the proper foundation, you'll begin learning the technical side of tattooing. You'll become familiar with tattoo machines, needles and cartridges, inks, stencil preparation and application, workstation setup and breakdown, equipment handling, and the fundamentals behind properly applying a tattoo. This stage also places a major emphasis on sanitation, cross contamination prevention, bloodborne pathogen safety, client preparation, and maintaining a clean professional workspace. You'll learn not only how tattoo equipment works, but how and why professional artists use it safely and correctly.

STAGE THREE: HANDS ON TRAINING

Approximately 6 Months

This is where everything you've been learning begins coming together. Under supervision and once you've demonstrated that you're ready to progress, you'll begin gaining hands on tattoo experience and eventually working with live clients. You'll learn how to take a tattoo from the initial conversation through design, preparation, stencil placement, tattoo application, aftercare, and the finished piece. You'll also begin developing one of the most important skills a tattoo artist can have: working with people. Every client is different. Learning how to listen, communicate, understand what someone wants, make professional recommendations, manage expectations, and give them a great experience is just as important as learning how to put ink into skin.

STAGE FOUR: FROM APPRENTICE TO TATTOO ARTIST

Completing an apprenticeship doesn't mean you're finished learning. It's the beginning of your career. As you progress toward working professionally, the focus shifts toward developing your portfolio, improving consistency, working independently, building relationships with clients, and understanding the responsibilities that come with being a professional tattoo artist. You'll also learn about the applicable California and San Diego requirements you'll need to meet before working professionally. And we're not going to choose your artistic identity for you. Part of becoming a tattoo artist is discovering what you're good at, what you love tattooing, and what eventually makes someone look at a piece and recognize it as your work.

THINK YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

We're not looking for someone who simply thinks tattooing looks like a cool job. We're looking for people who are serious about art, willing to learn, able to take constructive criticism, and prepared to put in the work required to develop their craft. You don't need to walk through our doors already knowing how to tattoo. That's the point of an apprenticeship. But you should be ready to draw, practice, listen, learn, improve, and earn your progression. If you're interested in becoming an apprentice at SoCal Tattoo & Piercing, we'd like to hear from you. Tell us about yourself, your experience with art, why you want to become a tattoo artist, and show us some of your work.
